About your work coach
When you make a claim for Universal Credit you will usually be given a work coach. A work coach can help you prepare for work, get a job or increase your earnings.
Your work coach can give you support and advice even when you start work, depending on your circumstances.
Work coaches also offer support to:
- people leaving care
- ex-offenders
- people under the age of 18
- people with health conditions

What work coaches say about their role
"My role involves supporting people from all backgrounds and circumstances to find out what interests them the most and why. We can then build on this to help them work towards achieving their goals.
On a daily basis it is fun, rewarding and totally unpredictable and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
I try to talk to everybody in a calm and relaxed manner. I believe that any issue can be solved in a peaceful and practical way.
The role of the work coach involves patience, perseverance and belief in who you support. No two days are the same and it is always rewarding when somebody you have been supporting is successful in their career pathway."
Arran, Work Coach, Brighton Job Centre
"Every person I deal with is unique - my job is to understand your interests, your skills and individual needs and then work with all my colleagues to find you a suitable opportunity….Put simply my job is to find you a job."
Paul T, Hove Job Centre
"My role is to match job vacancies with what interests each claimant most. This can be based on previous work and education experience, other responsibilities and hobbies, and broader career goals.
I'm very fortunate to spend time discussing in depth how each person's skills and characteristics can be effectively presented to potential employers. Seeing high quality applications completed, and then hearing success stories from our claimants and colleagues in my work coach team, makes the job a privilege to do."
