About apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a way of learning and working, so you gain a qualification and experience in the career that you are interested in.

You will need to search and apply for vacancies and have an interview to start.

An apprenticeship might be the right choice for you, if you:

  • prefer a practical, hands on style of learning
  • are reliable, punctual and follow instructions
  • know what career you would like to pursue
  • have found vacancies available in the area you are interested in

As an apprentice, you will be paid and entitled to at least the minimum wage. Some opportunities pay the minimum wage but many pay more than this.

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

You will be paid for:

  • your normal working hours
  • training that’s part of your apprenticeship (at least 20% of your normal working hours)
  • study towards English and maths qualifications, if they’re part of your apprenticeship
