Fees for cremations, burials and memorials
This guide details the charges for services at Brighton & Hove's cemeteries and crematorium.
Cemetery fees
Why non-residents pay higher cemetery fees
Our cemetery services are primarily funded and maintained through contributions from local council tax payers. These contributions help cover the costs of:
- grounds maintenance
- infrastructure
- staffing
- long-term upkeep
This pricing structure ensures fairness to our residents.
Charging non-residents a higher rate helps:
- protect local resources for those who live in the area
- maintain high standards of care and service without placing additional financial burden on residents
- ensure cemetery operations are sustainable for future generations
There's no link between the purchase grave rights and the burial fee.
Burial fee
A non-resident fee will apply if the person to be interred was not a resident at the time of death. This is regardless of the status of the purchaser of the burial rights.
Purchase of Exclusive Right of Burial fee
A non-resident fee will apply when the purchaser is not resident at time of purchase. This is regardless of the status of the deceased to be buried in the grave.
Residents who recently moved from the city
We understand that people may move from the city following a bereavement or to be cared for in a nursing home or similar. Where evidence is provided that they were resident in the city in the previous 5 years from the date of burial or purchase resident fee will apply.
You need to provide evidence which can be confirmed by BHCC prior to the purchase or burial for this to be enacted.
Peacehaven Town Council residents
Residents who live within the Peacehaven Town Council boundary are currently treated as residents for the purposes of burial and memorial fees. This is due to a special arrangement between Peacehaven Town Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. Proof of address within the Peacehaven Town Council boundary is required to confirm eligibility. This arrangement is subject to periodic review and may change in the future.
Cemetery fees for residents and non-residents of Brighton & Hove
Fees apply to all purchases of grave rights, interment and ashes interment.
Where a non-resident is to be buried a non-resident fee will apply regardless of the status of the grave owner.
We understand that burial decisions are deeply personal, and we strive to offer compassionate and transparent services to everyone. If you have questions about fees or eligibility, send an email to woodvale@brighton-hove.gov.uk and our Bereavement Services team will help.
