Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) 2 scheme
Find out more about our successful bid for the Department for Transport’s ZEBRA 2 scheme.
In September 2023 the Department for Transport launched the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) 2 scheme to support the introduction of zero emission buses and charging infrastructure.
The scheme saw a single-stage funding competition open to local transport authorities (LTAs) based in England (outside of London).
In December 2023 Brighton & Hove City Council, working in partnership with Brighton & Hove Buses, submitted a bid for the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) 2 scheme.
The successful bid will see the delivery of sixteen battery electric buses, together with the required infrastructure, to replace diesel buses on routes within Brighton & Hove. Precise details of the bid are commercially sensitive.
A report detailing ZEBRA 2 and recommendation to support the bid was presented to the Transport & Sustainability committee on Tuesday 5 December 2023 and to the Strategy, Finance & City Regeneration committee on Thursday 7 December 2023.
This successful ZEBRA 2 bid has secured considerable investment for the city and the potential benefits, including the reduction in air pollution and carbon emissions through the deployment of sixteen zero emission buses, will be critical in helping us to realise our goal of making Brighton & Hove carbon neutral by 2030.
Brighton & Hove City Council and Brighton & Hove Buses will now work together to deliver on the bid.
Further updates will be posted to this page in due course.
