Find out what School Streets are, how they work, where they are in Brighton & Hove, and who is exempt from restrictions.
About School Streets
School Streets schemes address issues on the roads around schools at drop off and pick up times. This includes congestion and illegal or unsafe parking immediately outside of a school.
They restrict access for motor vehicles on the roads around schools for one hour at either end of the school day.
This reduction in traffic provides a safer environment for children and their families. It also makes more road space for them to travel to school in more sustainable and active ways, such as walking or cycling.
School Streets are not full road closures. Some motor vehicles are exempt from restrictions, and can access the road at all times. You can find out more about exemptions below.
How School Streets work
School Streets are in force Monday to Friday from 8:15am to 9:15am and 2:45pm to 3:45pm.
They only operate during school term time, and not on weekends or during school holidays.
Motor vehicles are not allowed to enter the restricted areas during these hours, unless exempt.
There are signs at the entrances of School Streets to inform road users of the restrictions and enforcement hours.
School Streets may also use staffed gates, bollards, temporary barriers or other traffic management devices. These would need to be managed by School Streets volunteers or school staff.
School Streets restrictions are legally enforced through a Traffic Regulation Order. If you illegally access a School Street with your motor vehicle, we may issue you with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). The level of the penalty will vary according to the type of offence.
Exemptions
You can use the street at all times if you're:
driving a vehicle registered to an address within the restricted area (including those of businesses and residents)
a Blue Badge Holder who needs to access a property within the street
a Compass Card Holder who needs to access a property within the street
a Professional Carer or a Carer for vulnerable residents who live on the street
an Emergency Services vehicle on an emergency call
a utility provider on an emergency call
an employee, or working with, a business or service operating within the street
driving a contracted school transport vehicle
