What you need to apply for an older person's bus pass
What you'll need to provide when you apply for your first older person's bus pass, change your details or update your photograph and how to return your bus pass.
What you can apply for
On the apply for an older person's bus pass form, you can:
- apply for your first older person's bus pass
- request a replacement of an existing older person's bus pass
- request a change of name or address details to an existing record
- update your existing bus pass photograph

What you'll need to apply for your first bus pass
Proof of address
You'll need to upload one proof of address. This must be addressed to you and dated within the last 3 months.
This can be something like a:
- Council Tax bill for the current year
- utility bill
- mortgage statement
- signed tenancy agreement
- solicitors letter of completion of sale
- benefits or pension letter
- latest payslip from your employer that shows your name, address and the date
- letter from your local Council Tax or benefits office
- bank statement
Proof of identity
This must show your current name and date of birth.
This can be a:
- birth certificate and marriage certificate if applicable
- full or provisional driving licence – current or expired, photocard only
- current or expired passport - maximum of 12 months out of date
- residence permit
- original benefit award letter - if you have not used this as proof of your address
What you'll need if you request a change of details to an existing bus pass
If you’ve changed your name, you need to provide proof, such as a marriage certificate or deed poll.
If you have moved, you need to provide proof of address dated within the last 12 months.
You will not automatically receive a new bus pass by changing your details. If you would like to order a new pass with a change of name or photo, select the 'replacement' option from the dropdown menu.
What you'll need if you're changing your photograph
If you are changing your photograph, make sure:
- the picture doesn't include items such as hats or sunglasses or have poor lighting
- that your face is unobstructed unless for religious reasons
Returning your bus pass
You need to return your bus pass to us if:
- your moving out of Brighton & Hove - contact your new council to apply for a new bus pass
- you've ordered a replacement pass
You must return your Brighton & Hove bus pass by email or by post.
Submit an image of your bus pass by email
You can send an image of your bus pass cut into 4 pieces to prove it is destroyed, and can't be used.

Make sure the chip in the bus pass behind your photograph is cut in half.
To send us proof that you've destroyed your pass:
- Scan or take a photograph of the 4 pieces of your pass.
- Attach the image from your PC or smartphone in a Word document or paste the image in an email.
- Use your name as the subject of your email.
- Send the email to the email address below

Send your bus pass in the postal address below.
