Fares
Fares apply to all hirings within Brighton & Hove City. Journeys ending outside the city area may not exceed the authorised metered maximum fare unless a prior contract is made with the driver at the time of hiring.
The fare you should pay along with the relevant tariff code will be shown automatically on the taximeter.
Only extra charges may be added to the meter by the driver.
Tariffs
There are 10 tariffs. Tariffs 1 to 5 apply to journeys with 1 to 4 passengers. Tariffs 6 to 10 apply to journeys with 5 to 8 passengers.
Tariffs for journeys with 1 to 4 passengers
For journeys with 1 to 4 passengers, the following tariffs may apply.
Tariff 1 (normal fare)
This fare applies to all hirings except those mentioned in tariffs 2 to 10.
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £3.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 30 pence.
Tariff 2 (night fare)
This fare applies:
- Monday to Saturday between the hours of 9pm and midnight
- Sundays between the hours of 6am and midnight
- bank holidays or public holidays, excluding the times covered by Christmas Day and New Year extra charges
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £4.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 secondss or a combination of distance and time: 30 pence.
Tariff 3 (late-night fare)
This fare applies each day between midnight and 6am, excluding the times covered by tariffs 4 and 5.
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £5.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 30 pence.
Tariff 4 (Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day fares)
This fare applies:
- between 9pm on 24 December and 6am on 27 December
- between 6am and 10am on 1 January
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £4.50.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 45 pence.
Tariff 5 (New Year's Eve fare)
This fare applies between 9pm on 31 December and 6am on 1 January.
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £6.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 60 pence.
Tariffs for journeys with 5 to 8 passengers
For journeys with 5 to 8 passengers, the following tariffs may apply.
Tariff 6 (normal fare)
This fare applies to all hirings except those mentioned in tariffs 2 to 10.

Tariff 9 (Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day fares)
This fare applies:
- between 9pm on 24 December and 6am on 27 December
- between 6am and 10am on 1 January
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £6.75.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 70 pence.
Tariff 10 (New Year's Eve fare)
This fare applies between 9pm on 31 December and 6am on 1 January.
Fare for an initial distance not exceeding 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: £9.
Additional fare for all or part of each subsequent 176 yards or 54 seconds or a combination of distance and time: 90 pence.
Extra charges
Extra charges which can be added to the metered fare by the driver
Fouling charge
A fouling charge can be added of up to £100.
Booking fee
A booking fee of 20 pence can be added for telephone and pre-booked hirings.
Road charges or road tolls
The driver may charge any road charges or road tolls where applicable. This must be agreed with the customer before the hire commences.
Extra charges which cannot be added to the metered fare by the driver
Administration charges
An operator’s account administration charge, including VAT at the current rate, agreed by the prior contract, may be charged separately. If charged it will form part of the fare for the purpose of any legislation.
The driver cannot add these charges to the fare shown on the taximeter.
Additional information
The maximum number of people a vehicle is licensed to carry includes children of any age.
Payment for out-of-city journeys may be requested by the driver in advance of the journey.
A person who hires a vehicle but does not pay the fare in full commits an offence.

Safe Space
Safe Space is open on Friday and Saturday nights to support anyone who has become intoxicated, distressed, or injured during their night out.
