Road maintenance programme 2025 to 2026
Find out how we plan to improve roads, pavements and transport infrastructure.
Funding to improve our roads
Brighton & Hove has over 390 miles of roads and cycle lanes and 750 miles of pavement. Every year, we receive funding from the government for transport schemes.
We will spend the £8 million as follows:
- almost £4 million on improving our roads
- £620,000 on improving pavements
- more than £3 million on improving safety and accessibility and creating space for active and sustainable travel
- an extra £2.1 million on addressing immediate problems on our roads, including potholes
Find out about roadworks and events happening in your area using One.Network
One.Network is a third-party provider that collects data from all over the country, other councils, and third parties such as utility companies. This information helps you know what's happening in your local area and when, so you can plan your journey. The map is updated daily with reports.
Planned road maintenance programme
In 2025 to 26, we plan to treat or resurface more than 176,000 square metres of road in Brighton & Hove. This is done in different ways. Below is our planned programme.
Micro-asphalt
We will apply a layer of microasphalt to roads. This will make the surface smoother, skid-resistant and watertight. It can extend the life of the road by around 10 years and reduce the need for ongoing pothole repair.
The table below shows the schedule for the micro-asphalt work.
| Road | Location | Number of square metres | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buckingham Road | Trafalgar Street to Bath Street | 3821 | Scheduled July 2025 |
| Union Road | The entire road | 2490 | Scheduled July 2025 |
| Shirley Drive | Woodland Road to Old Shoreham Road | 13,107 | Complete |
| Old Shoreham Road | Lancaster Road to New England Road | 3300 | Scheduled July 2025 |
| Queens Park Road | Cromwell Street to Eastern Road | 13,185 | Complete |
| Carden Hill | Woodburn Avenue to Carden Avenue | 14,069 | Complete |
| Woburn Place | The entire road | 388 | Complete |
| Withdean Rise | The entire road | 1836 | Complete |
Machine Patching
Machine patching is a process used to repair damaged sections of a road surface, such as potholes or cracks. It involves repairing small areas to restore the road's integrity and improve its condition.
The table below shows the schedule for the machine patching work.
| Road | Location | Number of Square metres | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshfield Road roundabout | The entire road | 837 | Scheduled August 2025 |

| Lansdown Road | Cambridge Road to York Road | 1234 | Scheduled August 2025 |
Full resurfacing
Full resurfacing involves replacing the existing road surface with new asphalt or macadam (tarmac). The existing road is removed to the required depth before being reinstated with new material.
The table below shows the schedule for the full resurfacing work.

Repairing potholes and defects
As well as the planned programme, we carry out hundreds of repairs to fix potholes and other defects.
This includes pedestrian guard railing and pavement repairs, which include:
- rocking slabs
- block replacement
- bollards
- tree root damage
- kerb replacement
Where possible, we try to carry out work to prevent potholes and defects from appearing. It costs, on average, £200/m2 to repair a pothole in a failed road but just £10/m2 to treat a good road and prevent potholes from forming in the first place.
BSIP funded schemes
| Road | Location | Number of square metres | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| A23 Preston Road | South Road to Tongdean Lane | 18,822 | Scheduled winter 2025 |
| Western Road | Holland Road to Montpellier Road | 4895 | Scheduled 2026 |
Local Highways Maintenance Transparency Report
The Department for Transport (DfT) has requested that all local highways authorities publish information about their highways maintenance activities. This is so we can demonstrate to local taxpayers the difference that funding is making in our area.
