Introduction
Funding has been allocated from our Carbon Neutral Fund (CNF) and Local Transport Plan (LTP) to carry out path improvements in the Happy Valley area in Woodingdean.
The improvements cover sections between Brownleaf Road and Warren Road on Falmer Road.
This includes:
- extending the shared pedestrian and cycle path north from Brownleaf Road to the signalised pedestrian crossing at the main entrance to Happy Valley Park
- a new behind-the-hedge path on the permissive bridleway running parallel to Falmer Road between Warren Road and Brownleaf Road
- upgrading the Old Parish Lane bridleway
A bridleway can be used by:
- walkers
- cyclists
- horse riders
A permissive bridleway means permission has been granted by the landowner rather than it being a right of way.
At the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee held on 14 March 2023, the committee agreed to progress with the construction of the path improvements in phases. This is subject to available funding, commencing with Old Parish Lane.
All routes are determined in the Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) as strategic green corridors and identified as strategic corridors in the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).
Old Parish Lane improvements
In February 2024, we completed our work to improve Old Parish Lane.
It now has a 1.5 kilometre path, which is 3 metres wide and accessible for walking, cycling and wheeling.
We’ve also installed new gates and included a soft border for horse riders who use it.

Why does Old Parish Lane need improving?
Parish Lane bridleway became deeply rutted due to farm vehicle use. It was levelled and resurfaced over past years in hard-wearing road stone.
Path users have told us that the loose stone surface is not ideal for cyclists and horse riders, and this is a popular route connecting Ovingdean and Woodingdean.
