Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS)
We provide support early years and school age children and families with English as an Additional Language.
What does your service do?
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) offer a flexible and tailored service which is able to respond to the diverse and changing demands of the English as an Additional Language population in private, voluntary and independent Pre-schools and nurseries and also in primary and secondary schools across the city. EMAS offer a flexible provision, incorporating bilingual assistant and/or teaching support, as well as advisory input and training. Support can be arranged according to individual school's needs.
Where is it located and what area does it cover?
EMAS is located at Fairlight Primary School, St Leonard's Rd Brighton BN2 3AG and the area we cover is citywide.
Who does your service provide for?
We can provide support early years and school age children and families with English as an Additional Language.
How can I start using the service?
We do not take self referrals. Referrals to the service are made by pre-schools, schools and health visitors. An assessment is then undertaken in the pupil's mother tongue is then undertaken to assess the support they require. There are waiting lists to use our service but these are less than six weeks.
How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?
Day to day feedback and service evaluations are our main forms of communication.
We use Makaton and have access to a bank of bilingual assistants and home school liaison officers to support English as an Additional Language users.
We support carer's and parents by offering training in the use of The Triple P program (Positive Parenting Program), Family SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) and support family learning through community languages.
Is your service fully accessible?
We do not have service users at our premises.
What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had or are having?
All staff have training in SEN and issues around equalities. Our Staff have not had specific training around working with children with disabilities.
