School meals nutritional information and standards
Find out about the nutritional standards of our school meals, what to do about allergies or intolerances, and find useful links for healthy eating.
Nutritional standards
The Corporate School Meals Contract is provided by Caterlink, part of the WSH UK and Ireland Ltd. The contract is administered by our School Meals Team. Any schools that have opted out of this contract, as well as PFI schools, will have their own arrangements. Find out more about Caterlink.
Children are provided with a healthy balanced meal. We work with our contractors, Caterlink, to create the menus which include:
- a variety of red meat and poultry dishes, all to the red tractor standard
- sustainable fish including omega-3 rich oily fish
- local free range eggs
- balanced vegetarian dishes
- rice
- pasta
- a wide choice of fresh fruit, vegetables and salad
- fresh bread, cooked on site daily
School meal menus
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to display menus for all schools across the city. Many schools have opted for a temporary menu to ease the transition for all pupils being back in school.
You'll need to contact your school to confirm what menu is available.
Allergies or intolerances
If your child has an allergy or intolerance, we will be able to provide a safe and special diet plan for them. You need to complete our allergy and intolerance form and email it to admin@caterlinkltd.co.uk.
Food schemes
School fruit and vegetable scheme
The scheme covers all four to six-year-old children in maintained schools (schools under the control of the local council). The scheme, run by the Department of Health, entitles children to a free piece of fresh fruit or vegetable every school day.
The scheme aims to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables. It is hoped this will contribute to a reduction in the risk of heart disease and cancer in later life.
For further information contact your school or visit the 5 A Day website
School milk schemes
Brighton & Hove City Schools can take part in either or both of the following milk schemes from Cool Milk. Each scheme provides 189ml (1/3 pint) of semi-skimmed milk every school day.
- Under-fives milk scheme - provides free milk for every child under 5 who attends school for 2 hours or more per day
- Over-fives milk scheme - If your school offers this service then milk can be provided at a subsidised rate for children aged 5 to 11
