What graffiti, tagging, and street art are
Find out what we consider the differences between graffiti and street art to be, and what we do about them.
What graffiti and tagging are
Graffiti is anything that is written, sprayed or painted in public places on public or private property without permission. This can include text, images or other kinds of artwork.
Tagging is a type of graffiti where a name or symbol is written, sprayed or painted and is often repeated in different locations. It is a major issue in Brighton & Hove.
Graffiti and tagging are illegal, and we take enforcement action to tackle them.
For more information you can:

What street art is
Street art is artwork that has been created with permission from the property owner or landowner and in alignment with other permissions and legal requirements.
Brighton & Hove has a rich street art culture, and many legal artworks contribute positively to the city's character and identity.
In some locations, commissioned murals and approved street art projects have been successful in reducing repeat tagging and improving the appearance of an area.
We've developed guidance and resources to help you understand what's involved and how to get started. Read our street art guide.
