Report dumped items (fly-tipping)
Let us know if you see dumped items left in a public or private place, also known as a fly-tip.
What is a fly-tip?
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, items or materials. It's a criminal offence and you can receive an unlimited fine or court action.
Common examples of fly-tipping:
- leaving household items, appliances and furniture by communal bins
- leaving items on the pavement for others to take away or reuse
- dumping rubbish or building materials in the countryside or green spaces such as parks
Enforcing fly-tipping offences
If we have good evidence that someone has dumped items illegally, we will take action against them. This could mean issuing fines or taking legal action. We’ll need permission from the landowner to do this if the fly-tip is on private land.
Send an email to environmentalenforcement@brighton-hove.gov.uk if you have evidence that someone has dumped items illegally.
If someone or a company disposes of rubbish for you, please ensure they are registered to do so. If you don't, you could get a fine or have a court action against you.
We'll aim to collect a fly-tip on public land within 2 days of it being reported. If the fly-tip is on private land, it's the landowners' responsibility to remove the fly-tip.
