Recycle clothes, shoes and textiles
Find out what you can take to our textile recycling points, and how doing so supports the local community.
Do not put clothes, shoes or textiles in your recycling at home or your communal and shared recycling bins.
If you put the wrong things in your recycling it can spoil the rest of the good recycling you're doing.
What to do with unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles
Unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles can go to one of our many textile recycling points.
Our textile banks can take your:
useable clothing including paired socks, underwear and bras
hats, scarves and gloves
handbags and belts
blankets and bedsheets
footwear - in a bag, in pairs
All items must be clean and dry. We do not accept dirty or soiled items.
We also can't take duvets, pillows, cushions or curtains.
Textile items that can’t go in our textile banks belong in your household waste bin or can be taken to our Household Waste & Recycling Sites in Brighton and in Hove
You can also donate your items to charity shops across the city or use free sharing apps like Freegle and Olio or selling sites like Vinted.
Recycling and reusing textiles is good for the environment and can help us move towards a circular economy. Using our textile banks can also help the local community.
We use a company called A-Tex to manage and maintain our clothing and shoe banks.
The service is run at no cost to taxpayers. 40% of the profits go to community grants which local groups and charities can apply for. The other 60% is reinvested into some of the other 700 services we run daily.
