Food waste collections

About food waste collections
We started introducing weekly food waste collections in September 2025.
In Brighton & Hove, around a third of household rubbish is food and drink waste, about 2.8 kilogrammes per household each week.
Our goal is for all food waste to be recycled instead of being placed in household rubbish bins.
Timeline
Food waste collections are now available for all households across the city.
Do not try to recycle food waste with any other recycling, as this will cause contamination.
Too much contamination (too many wrong items in the wrong bins) can lead us not being able to recycle whole bins, and in some cases, entire truckloads of waste.
What we'll give you
We'll provide every household with a 5 litre caddy to go in your kitchen, and a starter pack of two rolls of compostable caddy liners.

The type of outside bin we provide will depend on where you live. If you:
- have your own wheelie bin in a kerbside area - we'll give you your own 23 litre outside food waste caddy
- live in flats - we'll provide a shared food waste bin for you and your neighbours
- live in a communal on-street bin area - we’ll provide specialist secure communal food waste bins
We'll send out instruction leaflets with your caddies. You can also download a copy of our food waste collections leaflet.
Do not put any food waste into your caddy until a week before your collections start. Until then, you should continue to put your food waste in with your household rubbish. Do not try to recycle food waste with any other recycling, as this will cause contamination.
