About The Keep

The Keep, which opened on the 19 November 2013, is a new historical resource centre at Woollards Field, near Falmer. It provides a home for all the archives and historical resources of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove and the special collections of the University of Sussex, including the internationally renowned Mass Observation Archive.

The building also includes the library and headquarters of the Sussex Family History Group.

Who can visit The Keep

The new building is open to anyone who wants to use the public search rooms and facilities. Learning and participation across all ages and every part of the community are encouraged, including schools, colleges, universities, volunteers, community groups and organisations.

The partners who delivered the project are East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and the University of Sussex.

Planning permission

Planning permission was granted for the proposal on 14 January 2011.  Details of the permission can be found here by entering the reference number (BH2010/03259) into the planning register.
