Resident digital parking permits
Find out what digital parking permits are and when we'll start issuing resident digital parking permits.
About digital parking permits
Digital parking permits are parking permits that we issue ‘virtually’.
When you buy a digital parking permit, you will not need to display anything in your vehicle windscreen. It works in the same way your Vehicle Tax has worked for many years.
Resident parking permits will be digital from 3 November 2025. From that date you will no longer receive a physical (paper) resident parking permit.
How this affects your current resident parking permit
If you have a resident parking permit, you do not need to do anything until it is time to renew it.
All parking permits can be renewed up to 6 weeks prior to their expiry date. You can view your parking permit expiry date in MyAccount.
We will send you an email 6 weeks before the expiry of your valid parking permit. This is a courtesy email only. We advise you to set up your permit renewal reminder to ensure you do not miss the renewal window.
If you forget to renew your parking permit before its expiry date, you will need to apply for a new permit using the ‘APPLY’ button within your MyAccount.
If you are in a waiting list zone, and you don’t submit a renewal application before your existing permit expires, you will have to re-join the permit waiting list.
How your digital parking permit will work
Your details and where you're covered
When we issue your digital parking permit, we'll send you an email or text message. This will confirm your details including your parking zone.
You can also check your details in your MyAccount. Go to the summary page to view your digital parking permit details.
If you can't get the information you need in MyAccount, you can raise a support ticket.
If you still can't find what you're looking for, you can contact the Parking service.
How we enforce parking restrictions
Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) will no longer rely on paper permits when enforcing parking restrictions.
They will scan your Vehicle Registration Number (number plate), which will tell them if:
- there is a valid digital parking permit associated with it
- any restrictions that may apply
- where your vehicle is permitted to park
Enforcement officers will only issue a Penalty Charge Notice (parking fine) if there is no digital permit or paid parking session in the system.
Why some vehicles display a paper permit and some do not
If you are issued a resident parking permit from 3 November 2025, you will not display a paper permit in the windscreen.
All other permit holders still need to display their paper parking permit in the windscreen of their vehicle until it is time to renew.
Therefore, although you will see fewer paper parking permits displayed on vehicles from 3 November 2025, there will still be some vehicles displaying their parking permit. Approximately one year after the change to digital permits, there will no longer be any paper resident permits visible on vehicles.
Cost
The cost of digital parking permits will remain the same. Check how much a resident parking permit costs.
Benefits
Digital parking permits are designed to bring you benefits such as not having to wait for the postal service to deliver a physical permit.
The change will also help us to combat fraud, be more efficient and eliminate the need to print and post permits, reducing our carbon footprint.
Changing your vehicle
If you have a paper permit, and you change your vehicle after 3 November 2025, you will be issued with a digital replacement.
You can submit a ‘permanent change of vehicle’ application by logging into your MyAccount.
If you applied manually (paper form), you will need to contact the parking customer services team.
Get help if you can't apply for a parking permit online
If you can't apply online, contact the parking customer services team. Our advisors will assess your needs and help you. If we can’t help you over the phone, we will offer you an appointment or send you a paper application form in the post.
When you have completed your application, you'll still receive a digital parking permit. We'll send you a letter in the post to explain how it works, the start and end dates, and what you need to do when it’s time to renew you permit - which you can do up to 6 weeks prior to the expiration date of your existing one.
Other parking permits
We currently issue digital parking permits for event day digital visitor parking permits in zones B and D.
