Who can get a disabled parking bay?
Blue Badge holders can apply for an on-street parking bay outside or near their homes if they:
- have no off-street parking, such as a garage or driveway
- are the driver or the driver lives with them
Anyone with a Blue Badge may park in a disabled parking bay, even if they did not request that specific bay.
We can only install disabled parking bays on the public highway. We can't place bays on private land or areas which are not public highways, such as off-street car parks or those managed by Housing trusts.
To check if we're able to install a disabled parking space in the location you would like, contact us through our online form or phone us.
Application process
Timeline
- in a Controlled Parking Zone – up to 1 year or longer
- outside of a Controlled Parking Zone - up to 6 months
Process
- We'll write to you to acknowledge your application.
- We'll visit the site to ensure the bay meets our traffic management criteria.
- If the bay meets our traffic management criteria, we'll put white guidance marks down, unless you live in a controlled parking area.
- We'll write to you to tell you whether we've approved the bay.
- If you live outside of a Controlled Parking Zone, we'll tell our contractors to put in advisory bay markings - this can take 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the weather. If you live in a Controlled Parking Zone, disabled bay markings will follow approval of the next available Traffic Regulation Order
