Permit bays
Find out what permit bays are for, when you can use them and answers to frequently asked questions.
What permit bays are for
Permit bay signs on the street will say 'Permit Holders Only' and give the zone and times that the restrictions are in place.
This means that during the given times only a permit holder can park there. If you have purchased a pay and display ticket or paid for a parking session via PaybyPhone you can park in a paid parking bay or a shared use bay.
Can I park in a permit bay?
You can park in a permit bay if you are displaying:
- a resident permit
- a visitor permit
- a hotel permit
- a business permit
- a traders permit up until 4pm
- an essential duties dispensation, for up to one hour
You can only park in the zone specified on the permit. In the case of a traders permit or essential duties dispensation you can park in any permit bay in the controlled parking zone.
The permits should be clearly displayed and valid for that vehicle. A visitor or hotel permit must be completed in full.
Why do we have permit bays?
We have permit bays so that permit holders, and their visitors, can park close to their home. Permit bays also allow businesses to carry out essential work throughout Brighton & Hove.
How do I know what the time of the restriction is?
The sign on the street will tell you this. If no times are shown the bay operates at all times, 24 hours a day and every day.
I have received a penalty charge notice when parking in a permit bay, what do I do?
