Cycle training for children and young people

Courses are available to help children learn how to ride a bike. We provide Bikeability training courses throughout the year for children in school years 5 to 10.

Training is available through schools or on a course during the school holidays. 

Parents and carers can ask at school if a course is being organised.

About Bikeability cycle training courses

Bikeability level 1 (ages 9 to 15)

Children must be able to ride without stabilisers.

In level 1, children learn:

  • how to carry out a simple bike check
  • safe start and stopping procedures
  • turning left and right
  • how to use the gears on their bicycles

The training takes place on the playground.

Level one is 2 sessions of 90 minutes on consecutive days.

Bikeability level 2 (ages 9 to 15)

Children revise the previous level.

In level 2, children learn:

  • how to turn left and right
  • how to pass parked vehicles
  • road signs

The training takes place on the road near to the school where suitable junctions can be found.

Level two is 5 sessions of 90 minutes on consecutive days.

Bikeability level 3 (ages 11 to 15)

Children must have attended level 2 and will be assessed on the level 2 outcomes before progressing to level 3 

Children revise levels 1 and 2.

In level 3, children learn how to:

  • navigate junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights and multi lanes
  • change lanes

The training takes place on busy roads and complex junctions where suitable junctions can be found.

Level 3 is 4 sessions of 90 minutes on consecutive days.

Bikeability courses in school holidays

We provide courses for children in Hove Park and Preston Park during the school holidays.

Half terms (October, February and May)

Levels 1 and 2 - The course is run over 4 days, 10am to 12:30pm each day. For 9 to 15-year-olds.
Level 3 – The course is run over 3 days, 1:15pm to 3:15pm each day.  For 11 to 15-year-olds.

Easter holidays

Levels 1 and 2 - The course is run over 4 days, 10am to 12:30pm each day. For 9 to 15-year-olds.
Level 3 – The course is run over 3 days, 1:15pm to 3:15pm each day. For 11 to 15-year-olds.

Summer holidays

Level 1 and 2 - The course is run over 4 days, 10am to 12:30pm each day. For 9 to 15-year-olds.
Level 3 – The course is run over 3 days, 1:15pm to 3.15pm each day.  For 11 to 15-year-olds.
