EYC training - Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for childcare practitioners
An elearning course about food safety and hygiene in early years settings.
The aim of this training
The aim of this training is to ensure food handlers have an:
- understanding of the basic principles of food hygiene
- knowledge of how to work safely to protect the food they serve from contamination
Who this training is for
This training is for all staff working in a professional childcare role including those from commercial nurseries, childminders, and those from not-for-profit or volunteer settings.
For England, the EYFS states that, “In group provision, all staff involved in preparing and handling food must receive training in food hygiene.”
This is an elearning course, which can be started at any time
By taking this course, childcare practitioners will meet the legal and curriculum requirements for preparing, handling, cooking and serving food in their setting.
Key course topics:
- Food safety hazards and how food poisoning occurs
- How to handle and prepare food safely and hygienically at all stages from delivery to service.
- The consequences of not handling food safely including food poisoning.
- Food safety law and how requirements apply to the setting
- Food safety management systems and HACCP principles
This course meets the requirements of UK Law and the individual curriculum requirements of England, Scotland and Wales.
This Food Hygiene course by NDNA has RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Course Assurance.
RoSPA Course Assurance confirms that the course:
- contains relevant health and safety information
- is pitched at the appropriate level
- meets the highest standards for trainer competence and course quality.
Duration
This e-learning training should take approximately 6 to 8 hours to complete (depending on learning speed).
As an e-learning module the learner can complete this training in convenient stages and revisit whenever they wish. The system will record their progress throughout.
Certification
The learner will receive a Qualifi Accredited Certificate when they have successfully completed the course.
Who should do this training
This is specialist training - for childcare practitioners who need training in the fundamental skills of health & safety.
Please note that only 3 practitioners per setting can apply for this course.

This e-learning course is available at a cost of £10
This is paid to Brighton & Hove City Council with a credit or debit card, using the online application form and secure payment system.
Once your application and payment has been received, you will be contacted with log-in details. Each learner can then access the e-learning course at their own pace and at times to suit them.
