Letting Agents Scrutiny Review Panel (2011)
Panel Summary
The Panel looked at the main elements of the national Citizens Advice Bureau's “Let Down” report, deciding to focus on the additional charges that tenants had to pay for their initial and rolling tenancy agreements. These charges were for letting agents’ services for obtaining references, carrying out credit checks, providing an inventory and renewing 6- 12 monthly tenancies. Some of these charges were seen as hidden, not transparent enough, and not value for money.
Witnesses who gave evidence included Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB), Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), letting agents, tenants, Southern Landlords Association, the Cabinet Member for Housing and Council Housing and Trading Standards Officers.
