We Are Undefeatable - Eugene's story
As part of our We Are Undefeatable campaign, local resident Eugene has shared his inspiring story as a reminder that living with a long-term health condition does not mean giving up on being active.
For many people living with a long-term health condition, the thought of becoming more active can feel daunting.
But for 72-year-old Eugene, one small decision to try something new opened the door to improved confidence, better health and new friendships.
Positive changes
Eugene's journey shows that positive changes can start with a single step and that it really is never too late to take the first one.
After being diagnosed with osteoporosis, Eugene knew he wanted to do what he could to stay strong, independent and active.
He had seen first-hand the impact that reduced mobility had on his mother later in life, and it reinforced how important it was for him to look after his own health and wellbeing.
Eugene said: “I had to look after my mother who wasn’t able to look after herself and I realised, seeing her diagnosis and condition, that strength and balance was something that I had to take on board.”
Diving in at the deep end
Being active had always been part of Eugene's life. For many years he enjoyed playing badminton, but as his condition progressed, he realised he could no longer play at the same level.
Eugene began looking for a different way to keep moving, one that felt right for where he was in life.
"You can't do everything you once did. But that doesn't mean you have to stop moving.
“King Alfred Sports Centre was doing an open day and I happened to go there and one of the team that was advertising various activities suggested that the session in Moulsecoomb would be a good one for me.
"I arrived with great trepidation. I didn't know anybody and it felt like diving in at the deep end. The easy option is not opening that front door."
No regrets
Two years later, Eugene is still attending the class every week.
Over time, he has noticed improvements in his strength and mobility, and he feels capable of doing more than when he first started.
For Eugene, attending is part of a routine that helps him stay active, connected and positive.
Eugene added: “It's also been pointed out by my sister who's actually noticed quite a change in my posture.”
“The class is not just about the class. It's about the social aspect as well.
"I've never regretted attending a session. Never."
