City Centre manager driving improvements to the heart of the city
Brighton & Hove City Council now has a dedicated City Centre Manager focused on making the heart of our city cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits.
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said: “By introducing a dedicated City Centre Manager, we’re ensuring this area gets the focused attention it deserves.
“Crucially, this role has been designed to cut across multiple council departments, viewing the city centre as a whole and coordinating teams and services accordingly. Laszlo is already making a positive impact, and we’re excited to see this momentum continue.
“Feedback from local businesses, the Brighton Business Improvement District (BID), and the Hoteliers Association made it clear that this area needed more attention. In response, the Council created this new role to bring a joined-up approach and work closely with the community.”
Since taking up the role Laszlo has been out in the city centre every day, building relationships with businesses and residents, and coordinating improvements with council teams and partners. His job is to make sure the city centre looks and feels its best, tackling problem areas and working with community groups and contractors to keep the streets clean and safe.
The first focus area, from Brighton Station to the seafront, the main gateway into the city, has received excellent feedback from businesses and visitors. Next, we’re developing plans with local businesses for further enhancements, including sponsorship for planting and other initiatives to make the city centre cleaner and more welcoming.
Gavin Stewart, Executive Director of Brighton BID, said: "We welcome the introduction of the City Centre Manager role and have already seen the benefits of a more coordinated approach. Businesses want to see a cleaner, safer and more attractive city centre. Having a dedicated point of contact is a big step forward in achieving that."
