Care leavers in Brighton & Hove are being urged to apply for FREE bus travel as part of our drive to support young people in the city.
Those aged between 18 and 24 and still living in the city will be eligible for a free monthly bus pass for use during a 3-month pilot launching in September.
The pilot is just one of the ways we’re helping to make bus travel in Brighton & Hove more affordable and will support more than 200 care leavers access education, work and link them with friends, family, shops and businesses.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “I’m so pleased we’re able to launch this offer of free travel for care leavers and I’m confident we’ll be able to continue it beyond the initial 3-month pilot.
“We know the challenges young people face when leaving the care system and we should be doing as much as we can to help them with the transition.
“We’re passionate about keeping bus travel affordable for families and young people in Brighton & Hove. Helping them to access education, employment and training leads to better outcomes for everyone.”
In total, we’re spending around £1.4 million in 2026/27 with funding from the Department for Transport’s Local Authority Bus Grant.
These offers are in addition to the more than £10 million we’ll be spending again on providing free travel for people with Older and Disabled Person’s Bus Passes, funded by surplus from council fees and charges.
A new bus fare will launch on Wednesday 1 July for people living and working in the Whitehawk area of the city.
Around 200 young people leaving care will receive free bus travel as part of new fare offers designed to help city families and young people get to school, education or employment.
More than £12 million looks set to be spent on supporting bus travel for older and disabled people in Brighton & Hove over the next 12 months.
