Cabinet approves Safer, Better Streets for 2026/27
Councillors have approved a list of roads and junctions set for safety improvements.
Last week at Cabinet, members agreed the Safer, Better Streets priority list for 2026/27.
Every year, using a set criteria which includes traffic speeds, collision data, perceived risk and accessibility, we produce a list of the top areas of the city most in need of safety measures.
5 schemes in the priority list are set to be taken forward:
- Dyke Road junction with The Droveway
- Freshfield Road - junction between Queens Park Terrace and Cuthbert Road
- Lewes Road opposite the Bates Estate
- Warren Road, Woodingdean, at the bend by the Sheepcote Valley car park
- Bottom of Findon Road over Whitehawk Road
Around £270,000 will be spent on making the improvements.
Others are on hold pending feasibility studies, design and consultation, require further funding or are part of another project. These include:
- New England Road/New England Street junction A270
- Church Street junction with Spring Gardens and Portland Street
- Elm Grove Tenantry Down/Freshfield junction
- Church Road, Portslade, Between St Peters Road & St Michaels Road
- Trafalgar Road / Locks Hill / Old Shoreham Road
- Goldstone Villas / Station Approach
- Goldstone Crescent, junction with The Droveway

A rolling programme of improvements to our roads
Earlier this year we launched public consultations on a further 4 schemes being taken forward from last year’s priority list.
- Old Shoreham Road near Silverdale Road
- Court Farm Road, just west of Nevill Close
- Holmes Avenue at the junctions with Cranmer Avenue and Elm Drive
- Surrenden Road at the junction of Surrenden Holt and the entrance to Varndean College.
The consultations on these close on Sunday 22 February.
In the last year we’ve carried out several improvements to our roads.
The junction of Nevill Avenue and Holmes Avenue saw improved pedestrian crossings and dropped kerbs, a new zebra crossing and resurfaced roads.
At the junction of Newtown Road and Fonthill Road closed the west arm of the junction to prevent rat running, raised the junction to tackle speeding, planted new trees and installed new paving and cycle stands
The roundabout at Goldstone Villas, Eaton Villas and Clarendon Villas was removed and replaced with a new junction with a zebra crossing, wider pavements, space for new trees and grass verges.
Work has also been carried out on the junction of Compton Avenue and Buckingham Place and the junction of Dyke Road and Upper North Street, as part of separately funded improvements to our roads.

Investing in a safer city
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “Road safety is a priority for us and it’s great to see 5 schemes from our priority list are set to be taken forward this year.
“Assessing each request under a clear and data driven criteria means we can prioritise the most urgent areas where funding allows.
“We receive a lot of requests for road safety improvements and it’s important we listen to those residents who have concerns. We want local communities to be involved throughout the process of any change This includes public consultation and engagement from design stage all the way through to completion.
“The improvements we’ve already made are making a real difference to the safety of our city and with others already out for consultation, more will follow in the coming months.”
