West Saltdean Neighbourhood Plan consultation has begun
A six-week public consultation on the West Saltdean Neighbourhood Plan is now underway.
The draft plan has been prepared by West Saltdean Neighbourhood Forum, who submitted it to the council for publication and consultation.
Councillor Liz Loughran, chair of the Planning Committee, said:” Neighbourhood planning is a way for local people to take a lead in planning the future of their area.
“Neighbourhood Plans must be in conformity with the City Plan, guiding development and helping to decide the outcome of planning applications in the area.
“I hope that as many West Saltdean residents as possible will help shape the future of their community by taking part in this consultation.”
Conserving and improving
The West Saltdean plan sets out the aim to conserve and improve the unique local character of the area’s built environment and open spaces. It seeks to “establish infrastructure to support existing and new residents, businesses and community groups” working to “create a healthier, more sustainable environment with good access to quality open spaces and thriving shops, businesses and community-run buildings and land.”
West Saltdean was formally designated as a Neighbourhood Area and Neighbourhood Forum in 2022. The Neighbourhood Forum has since been preparing its plan in consultation with residents and stakeholders. The Neighbourhood Forum undertook a public consultation on their draft plan in 2024 and has since made some amendments in response to comments by the council and other consultees.
Next steps
When the current consultation is completed, the council will submit the draft plan and all consultation responses received to an appointed examiner who will consider if the plan meets all the necessary statutory requirements.
Based on the examiner’s report, the council will then decide whether to put the neighbourhood plan to referendum.
If approved at referendum, the neighbourhood plan will be formally ‘made’.
