This year’s No Smoking Day on 12 March coincides with our new local campaign to encourage smokers to quit smoking for good.
Data from GPs across Brighton & Hove has revealed that an estimated 53,000 people, or 18% of the population, over the age of 15 in the city are smokers. Brighton & Hove has the highest smoking rate in the southeast.
It's Well Worth It
The It’s Well Worth It campaign, being rolled out across social media, local services and public transport over the next 6 months, aims to emphasise the health, wellbeing and financial benefits to quitting smoking, such as:
- After 48 hours, your sense of smell and taste will start improving
- After 28 days without smoking, you’re 5 times more likely to quit for good
- Other benefits will follow, including better blood circulation to your heart and muscles, which will make physical activity easier, and improved lung function
- Every week you can save around £38 - that’s close to £2,000 a year
Start living a smoke-free life
Councillor Jacob Allen, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Service Transformation, said: "National No Smoking Day is the day you could start to reap the rewards of living a smoke-free life.
“Many people feel the benefits of stopping smoking straight away, including breathing more easily and having more energy.
“Our campaign aims to highlight the benefits of quitting smoking, from the financial savings to significant improvements in health and wellbeing.
“You’re 3 times more likely to quit smoking with help from a trained stop smoking advisor, and support services are available to give you the best chance of quitting.”
