Celebrating activism this LGBTQ+ History Month
February is LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK.
To celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ+) lives in their full diversity, we’ll be flying the inclusive rainbow flags from Hove Town Hall, Brighton Town Hall and Jubilee Library.
LGBTQ+ History Month provides education and insight into the issues that the LGBTQ+ community face by highlighting specific histories, important events and milestones, alongside the people that have made change possible.
This year’s theme ‘Activism and Social Change’ commemorates the movements, campaigns, and individuals who have shaped LGBTQ+ rights and recognition in Britain and beyond.
The theme resonates deeply with our local LGBTQ+ communities, often at the forefront of enabling change reflecting on both historical struggles and contemporary challenges.
From the early days of the Gay Liberation Front in the 1970s to modern grassroots movements, the theme celebrates decades of collective action that has transformed British society.
For younger LGBTQ+ individuals, this year's theme offers crucial connections to their community's history of resistance and triumph. It provides context for current challenges while highlighting effective strategies for creating social change.

A history of courage and resilience
Councillor Leslie Pumm, Cabinet member for Communities, Equalities and Human Rights, said: “I’m very proud to once again support our city in celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month. I am often deeply moved by the power of our LGBTQ+ stories - stories not just told, but lived, breathed, and fought for.
“Our city's LGBTQ+ history is a testament to courage and resilience. From the Sussex Gay Liberation Front to today's vibrant activism, Brighton & Hove has been a sanctuary where differences are celebrated, not just tolerated.
Our stories aren't just history—they're living proof of transformation. Each moment of authentic truth builds a foundation for those who follow. As global challenges threaten progress, our unity becomes our greatest strength.
Remembrance is resistance. By honouring our past, amplifying marginalized voices, and standing in solidarity, we keep hope alive. Our light, joined together, can pierce through any darkness.”
