A programme to install 150 residents’ cycle hangars across Brighton & Hove has been completed.
The final batch of hangars have been installed at 39 locations around the city in the last few weeks.
Hangar number 150 was placed on Langdale Road, Hove last week.

Members of the Transport and Sustainability committee will next week be presented with a report, updating them on the scheme’s progress.
The completion of the rollout means there are now 900 spaces for residents to store their bikes safely and securely.
The hangars have been extremely popular since installation began in the summer of 2022. More than 95% of spaces have been allocated to residents and over 2000 people are on a waiting list.
A list of the 39 new hangars can be found in Appendix B of the committee report.
17 proposed locations, which received six or more objections from residents, weren’t taken forward.
Growing cycling infrastructure
Councillor Trevor Muten, chair of the Transport and Sustainability committee said: “The cycle hangars have been extremely popular with residents, especially those living in blocks of flats and HMOs where space is at a premium.
“We’ve had hundreds of requests for hangars, but we’ve also been careful to listen to those with concerns. I’m pleased we’ve installed these hangars in locations across the city where there’s demand and support for them.
“If we want to encourage more active and sustainable travel to meet our Net Zero ambitions, then we have to provide the right infrastructure to make it easy for our residents.”
Background
In November 2021, we carried out a residents’ survey to determine possible cycle hangar locations.
We received over 2000 responses, requesting hangars on more than 500 roads.
Using a scoring system, based on things like number of requests, location and levels of cycle theft, the first 20 were installed in July 2022.
Since then, the programme of installation has continued with 79 hangars installed since last May 2023. The final hangar was installed in Langdale Road on 14 March 2024.
Last summer, the committee agreed to explore options to bring the management and maintenance of the cycle hangar scheme in house in the future, with the council receiving income directly from the hangar rentals.
