Bulky waste
Due to resource issues, we cannot take bulky waste phone calls today. The phone line will be open again at 9:30am on 22 April. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Work is set to begin next week on making journeys on one of the city’s busiest roads smoother and safer.
Over the next month, we’ll be resurfacing Lewes Road between Natal Road and Selsfield Drive.
The work will begin on Monday 29 April and is scheduled to be completed the week beginning Monday 20 May.
Once finished, the new surface will make journeys smoother while fixing potholes and other damage.
Bus services will continue to run throughout the work, though bus stops will be suspended.
Residents will still be able to access their homes.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Chair of the Transport and Sustainability committee said: “Lewes Road is in desperate need of improvement, so I’m delighted work is getting underway.
“Fixing, maintaining and improving our roads and pavements is key to making sure we keep Brighton & Hove moving. Lewes Road is a key corridor and used by thousands of vehicles every day so it’s crucial we keep it in good condition.
“Unfortunately, the money we receive from the government to help maintain and repair our roads has fallen year on year, making it much harder for us to keep up with demand. However, we are spending everything available to us to repair and improve the city’s roads.
“I appreciate the next few weeks will be disruptive while the work is taking place and I’d like to thank people for bearing with us. Signage and signals will be in place to ensure traffic flow and safe passage for drivers, bus passengers and cyclists throughout the planned works. The result will be worth the wait.”

While everything will be done to minimise the disruption, the work will mean some lane and road closures and diversions.
29 April to 1 May – cycle and bus lane closure on Lewes Road southbound opposite Selsfield Drive up to and including the exit at The Avenue.
1 May to 3 May – cycle and bus lane closure on Lewes Road southbound from the exit at The Avenue to Natal Road.
4 May – road markings will be repainted from Lewes Road southbound opposite Selsfield Drive to Natal Road.
7 May to 14 May – southbound and northbound central traffic lanes will be closed, traffic will use bus lanes, the central reservation crossing areas will also be closed.
15 May to 17 May – cycle and bus lane closure on Lewes Road northbound from opposite Natal Road to Moulsecoomb library.
16 May to 18 May – cycle and bus lane closure on Lewes Road northbound from Moulsecoomb library up to and including Selsfield Drive.
20 and 21 May – road markings will be repainted and also the red surface on the 3 junctions of The Avenue and junction with Selsfield Drive.
Any vehicles parked on the road within the work area will be removed from the site and relocated to an adjacent road away from the scheme. Signage and signals will be clear to notify all road users about the works, ensure safe passage e and minimise delays.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we carry out the work.
