New gritters ready to roll this winter

The clocks have gone back, the leaves are falling and the Christmas decorations have gone on sale. It can mean only one thing – it's gritting season!

This year, we have three new gritters ready to roll out when road temperatures drop.

The hybrid vehicles are directed around the route using a state-of-the-art mapping system; they spread grit automatically, depending on the need and width of the roads.

We’ve got 350 tonnes of grit, with 1,000 more on standby. Last winter, we used around 250 tonnes.

Our gritting teams, who are on call 24 hours a day from November to April, can treat 156 miles of roads across Brighton & Hove, prioritising key routes, including bus routes and roads that lead to places like hospitals and the city centre.

Our teams also have access to the latest technology, including new road sensors monitoring temperatures across the city and access to the latest weather forecasting information. Using the data they collect, we can then choose the most appropriate routes to treat and how much grit to use.

Unfortunately, gritting can’t guarantee roads are free of ice and snow. It also relies on traffic helping to mix the grit into surface water to prevent it from freezing.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm, said: “The new gritters will play a big part in keeping Brighton & Hove moving during the cold winter months.

“We’re using the latest technology to monitor road temperatures, so we can plan ahead for cold snaps and freezing conditions.

“Unfortunately, no matter how much we grit, it can’t guarantee a road is free of ice, which is why it’s important people continue to take care and drive to the conditions. Together, we can keep everyone safe this winter.”

Grit bins

We have more than 1,000km of pavement in the city, with grit bins at more than 400 locations, often on steep road junctions or hills.
