A new, fully accessible Changing Places toilet has opened in St Ann’s Well Gardens this week.
The new facility, complete with hoist, adjustable changing bench, height adjustable sink and extra space, is designed for people who are unable to use a standard accessible toilet and need the assistance of carers.
Accessible with a RADAR key, the toilet will be open between 10am to 6pm during the summer, and from 10am to 4pm during the winter.
This site has been installed thanks to grant funding provided by the government with support from Brighton & Hove City Council, in association with Muscular Dystrophy UK.

More improvements coming
St Ann’s Well Gardens isn’t the only space getting new facilities.
- A Changing Places toilet is due to open in Preston Park in the coming weeks while another was opened at the One Garden Brighton in Stanmer Park earlier this year.
- A revamp of the facilities at Ovingdean Undercliff is due to start on Monday 7 October which will also see the introduction of new family rooms with baby changing facilities.
- Work is continuing to improve the toilets at Goldstone Villas which includes improving the accessible toilet and refurbishing both men’s and women’s toilets to include family rooms, baby change facilities, and cubicles with grab rails. We’re hoping to reopen in late Autumn.
- The MacLaren Pavilion at the Level has been redeveloped into a split-use café and public toilet which we will open once a new café operator has been found.
- The Colonnade on Brighton seafront will be refurbished as part of Phase 3 of the refurbishment programme, with works starting next year.

Better toilets for everyone
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Environment and Net Zero said: “I’m so happy to see these new facilities at St Ann’s Well Gardens and Preston Park.
“Changing Places toilets are a lifeline for so many people and their families – it’s vital we make sure our parks and open spaces are accessible for everyone.
“Toilet facilities the city can be proud of is a priority for us. Residents and visitors deserve excellent facilities which are open all year round and that’s what we have been delivering."
