This year’s Poppy Appeal has been launched by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Mohammed Asaduzzaman, and the council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Amanda Grimshaw BEM, at an event welcoming the city’s Royal British Legion volunteers in the Mayor’s Parlour at Brighton Town Hall.
The purchase of the city’s first poppies from the Royal British Legion officially launches the 2024 Remembrance season.
This annual campaign, led by dedicated Royal British Legion volunteers, honours the bravery and sacrifices of our armed forces, both past and present.
The Poppy Appeal provides crucial support to veterans and their families while serving as a poignant reminder of the debt we owe to those who defended our freedoms.
Uniting the city in remembrance
Mayor Asaduzzaman said: "Each year, the Poppy Appeal unites our city in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Wearing a poppy is a powerful symbol of our shared gratitude and respect.
“I will wear my poppy with pride to reflect on the importance of remembrance and would encourage others to do so.
“It is a time to honour the courage of those who served, support our veterans and ensure that their stories are never forgotten."
Supporting the armed forces community
The funds raised through the Poppy Appeal are vital, providing lifelong care and support to the armed forces community, including veterans, serving personnel and their families.
Susan Coleman, Volunteer Poppy Appeal Coordinator for Brighton Central, said: "As Remembrance Sunday approaches, let us come together in remembrance and solidarity, passing these values on to future generations.
“Every poppy worn and every donation made helps improve the lives of those who have served."
Councillor Grimshaw said: "As the Armed Forces Champion, I am incredibly proud to back the Royal British Legion.
“This year, I’ve been personally volunteering to distribute poppies to local schools. This Saturday, many councillors will be out across the city selling poppies and raising awareness."
Poppies are available across the city from Thursday 24 October through to Armistice Day on Monday 11 November 2024.
Look for poppies at key locations throughout Brighton & Hove, including from local volunteers and shops.
Donations to the Poppy Appeal can also be made through the Royal British Legion website.
