Pride is the city’s biggest and busiest weekend of the year with around 300,000 residents and visitors out and about in the city.
Whether you’re cheering the parade, having fun at Fabuloso in the Park, dancing at the Village Party or celebrating with friends on the beach, we all need to do our bit to keep the city looking its best.
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet Member for Net Zero & Environmental Services said: “Our teams work really hard to keep the city clean every week but we as residents need to do our bit to help keep Brighton & Hove tidy.
“Keeping the city clean during and after Pride is an absolutely huge task. We’re preparing well for this weekend with extra staff collecting bins, sweeping, litter picking and jet washing. They’ll be plenty of bins available too, so please use them – and if the bin is full, find another or take your litter home.
“It’s fantastic to see people are out enjoying sunny weekends, but it’s disappointing to see increasing volumes of waste across the city, and particularly on the beach.
“Last weekend council teams picked up around 10 tonnes of waste from the seafront and the lawns – far more than we ever used to see.”
More bins to use
We’re working closely with Pride and putting more than 70 larger rubbish bins out around the city ahead of the event – particularly in the centre of town and along the seafront and Hove Lawns. Pride is also adding around 50 extra bins around the route.
We'll have extra Cityclean staff out emptying the bins throughout the weekend, but if the nearest bin is full, please use the next one or take your litter home with you.
Our Environmental Enforcement officers will be patrolling the city and handing out on-the-spot fines of £150 to anyone caught dropping litter or disposing of it incorrectly.
Public toilets in the centre of town and on the seafront will also be open later on Saturday, until around 9pm.
Cleaning up the city
As well as extra bin collections, we have extra street cleansing staff and sweepers working over the weekend in the city centre and on the seafront to keep on top of littering.
Pride is responsible for the clean-up operations after the parade, in Preston Park and the area of the Pride Village Party in Kemptown. After the events, Pride will work hard to get Preston Park and the Pride Village Party area open and back to normal as soon as possible.
As well as the weekend clean up team, we’ll have extra staff continuing the clean-up at the beginning of next week.
Following such a busy event, it will take a few days to catch up with cleaning in the city centre so please bear with us.
If you see anywhere that needs attention, please let us know using our online request a clean-up form.
Reducing contamination where we can
Please try your best to recycle and help us reduce contamination over the weekend.
If you put materials into the wrong recycling bin it could mean the whole lorryload of materials can’t be recycled.
Many of our bins along the seafront have three separate sections in different colours so please check before you chuck it.
We’re also advising local businesses to ensure their bins are securely contained to prevent them being used during the celebrations.
Big Pride Beach Clean
We have teamed up with Pride to organise clean up events as part of the Big Pride Beach Clean on Sunday morning.
These events are now fully booked and volunteers will be given a Sunday ticket to Fabuloso in the Park as a thank you for their time and commitment to keeping our beaches litter free.
City Angels
We support Pride’s City Angels initiative which asks local retailers, restaurants, hotels and other businesses to pledge to keep the front of your business clean, tidy and litter free over the Pride weekend.
It also asks businesses to be vigilant to hate crime incidents over Pride weekend, report incidents to police and be fully supportive of LGBTQ initiatives and events taking place in the city.
