How could our planning policies help reduce the impact of climate change?
The way the city develops in future could help us radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase biodiversity and protect our natural habitats and wildlife.
We have launched a consultation to hear the views of residents, local businesses and those working in building design and construction that will help to shape future development in the city over the next 15 to 20 years.
Through the City Plan 2041 consultation there will be a chance to give your views on areas such as sustainability and the natural environment; housing and accommodation; amenity spaces; transport and roads; supporting a sustainable economy; and building a healthy city.
Can we use development to get away from fossil fuels?
Council Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said:
“Brighton & Hove is a vibrant city with a unique landscape in the heart of the South Downs.
“The city is a flagship for sustainability and net zero action. We have a strong vision for transforming to a low carbon energy system for homes and transport, for increasing access to nature and for clean air, health and wellbeing.
“Developing the new City Plan gives us an opportunity to rethink our relationship with energy, fossil fuels and the wider sustainability agenda.
“How can we use development to get away from fossil fuels and on to a more sustainable path? One that protects biodiversity, supports our natural habitats and ensures we have the infrastructure to move around in a more sustainable and low carbon way?
“City Plan 2041 will contain the planning policies to guide future development.
“Tell us what should be in the plan that will support us to provide a sustainable, clean and safe environment for all, both now and in the future.
“Do you think we should set carbon emissions reduction targets across Brighton & Hove that are higher than the national standards?
“How could our planning policies help reduce the impact of climate change?
“How can they promote biodiversity?”
