A planning application to create 15 new residential flats following the demolition of an existing community centre building on the junction of Windlesham Close and Locks Crescent in Portslade, has been approved by councillors on the Planning Committee.
The development is part of our New Homes For Neighbourhoods programme which is building much-needed new rented council homes on council-owned land.
The planned three-storey split-height building would provide 15 residential flats, with proposals also including revised landscaping across the site.
All of the homes will be affordable housing provided at social rent levels and will be owned and managed by the council.
You can view the application and accompanying papers through our online Planning Register by searching for application reference number BH2023/02790.
The application was first advertised in November 2023. Following the receipt of amended plans it was then re-advertised in March 2024.
Twelve letters of objection have been received, raising a number of issues including the impact of additional traffic on local roads and parking; possible additional noise and disturbance; and overshadowing and loss of privacy for existing neighbouring homes.
Key considerations for councillors in reaching their decision included the additional affordable homes the development will provide, the loss of the existing community facility, the design and appearance of the proposed building and its impact on neighbours.
The standard of accommodation to be provided, transport, ecology and sustainability issues were also considered.
Committee members voted unanimously to approve the application.
