Coming together to remember victims of anti-trans violence
Wednesday 20 November marks Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR).
TDOR is observed annually to honour the memory of people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence and raise awareness of the immense suffering and harm caused by transphobia.
To show our solidarity, we will be flying the Trans flags from Hove and Brighton town halls.
Community solidarity
People are invited to join Brighton's trans, non-binary and gender-diverse communities at a gathering on Sunday 17 November at 11.30am in Fabrica, Duke Street, Brighton, BN1 1AG.
The community gathering will honour the trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals who have lost their lives to anti-trans violence and been persecuted for living authentically, as well as celebrate the remarkable strength and unity of Brighton’s TNBI communities.
There will be speeches from community peers, musical performances and a dedicated space for reflection and remembrance.
To create a safe and inclusive space for all, the event will be fully accessible and BSL interpretation will be provided for all speeches. Refreshments will be provided.
The event will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
To maintain the reflective nature of this commemoration, organisers respectfully request that attendees participate as individuals rather than organisational representatives.
Zero tolerance of transphobic violence
Councillor Leslie Pumm, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equality and Human Rights, said: “This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we stand firmly beside our trans, non-binary and gender-diverse communities as we honour, remember and mourn those who lost their lives to bigotry, prejudice and hatred.
“No amount of prejudice and persecution will ever have the power to erase trans people, their unique experience, the need to live authentically and the subsequent joy that comes out of it.
“There will never be tolerance for transphobic violence in Brighton & Hove. We are fully committed to working with our TNBI communities to support them and create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all individuals can thrive.
“I encourage all to join us in showing solidarity to our TNBI communities during our Sunday gathering and strengthen our collective voice calling for trans rights, acceptance and respect for all.”
Our trans and non-binary inclusive approach
We’re proud of being a diverse city and the council’s commitment to equality and inclusion for all people, including our trans and nonbinary residents. Brighton & Hove stands in full solidarity with the trans community, in our city and beyond, in its struggle for safety and equality in all aspects of their lives.
The city’s Trans Needs Assessment and Trans Equality Scrutiny group identified the Trans & Nonbinary community as a group made vulnerable by our society, and highlighted the need to remove the stigma and build relationships. We know from a range of evidence that gender is more complicated than is traditionally recognised.
Our equality and inclusion strategy rightly supports those who are experiencing greatest disadvantage. We will work together to advance equality and inclusion for trans, nonbinary & LGBTQ+ communities. We aim to do this in partnership with national and local organisations and communities.
Reporting hate crime and anti-social behaviour
Everyone in Brighton & Hove has a right to feel safe.
We are committed to supporting communities harmed by hate crime.
We encourage anyone who has experienced anti-social behaviour (ASB) or hate incidents, harassment or distress due to their identity, to report it.
You can report hate incidents or ASB to Sussex Police on 101 if it’s not an emergency. In an emergency, always call 999.
Council tenants, council leaseholders and tenants of leaseholders who've experienced hate incidents or ASB should report it to Housing Customer Services. Housing association tenants need to report incidents to their landlord.
Private rental sector tenants and owner occupiers can report hate incidents and ASB to the Community Safety Team using our online anti-social behaviour and hate incident reporting form or by contacting our Community Safety team by emailing communitysafety.casework@brighton-hove.gov.uk or calling 01273 292735.
