A development of new low-cost homes in Portslade is nearing completion.
The 104 homes will be the first delivered by Homes for Brighton & Hove, a partnership between the council and affordable housing provider, Hyde.
The development of highly energy-efficient one, 2 and 3-bedroom flats, is a mix of new council-rented homes, with the rest available through Hyde as shared ownership homes.
Building affordable homes
Speaking at a recent visit to the development, Councillor David Gibson, co-chair of the Housing Committee said: “It’s fantastic to see the first of the Homes for Brighton & Hove development nearing completion.
“The Portslade development includes 49 new council-rented homes, with another 127 on the way later this year in the Homes for Brighton & Hove development in Coldean.
“We’re proud in Brighton & Hove to have one of the most ambitious programmes of building new council homes in the country, and our partnership with Hyde is an important part of our work to increase the supply of affordable homes in the city.
“I am particularly delighted that thanks to the reorientation of the joint venture, the council will not only be getting these 49 new homes, but also that they will be let at truly affordable social rents.”
Mark Docherty, Sales and Marketing Director at Hyde said: “We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved here in Portslade.
“These one, 2 and 3-bedroom flats are very energy efficient which will help keep bills low for customers and that’s really important for everyone right now.
“We are also delighted that the homes are ready ahead of earlier than forecast, providing much needed low-cost homes for local people in the city.”
Wider benefits
The 100% affordable development has helped create around 60 new jobs for local people, as well as apprenticeships and work placements on the site.
There have also been improvements to the local area including a new pedestrian link and green corridor. There will also be a car club and bicycle share scheme for residents.
The council-rented homes will be let to people on the council’s housing register and will be available later in the spring.
Homes for Brighton & Hove is also building 242 low cost homes in Coldean, which include 127 council-rented homes. The Coldean development is due to be completed this autumn.
