Councillors led events across the city over the weekend as part of the city’s ‘Big Clean Up’.
Events were held on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 July to clean up the city ahead of the busy summer months.
The events included weeding residential streets in Hangleton, removing graffiti at Saltdean Oval and litter-picking at Woollards Field in Coldean.
In total, 23 clean up events took place in wards across Brighton & Hove and 1.2 tonnes of litter was collected over the weekend.
Getting stuck in
Councillors were out in their wards tackling ‘grot spots’ and cleaning up their neighbourhoods.
The areas and tasks were chosen by councillors with input from their residents and guidance and materials provided by our Cityclean team.
On the day of the events, councillors gave health and safety demonstrations, got stuck in with their activities and worked with groups of volunteers to clean up their wards.
Leave No Trace on Brighton beach
Leave No Trace Brighton, a community led environmental group, supported our Regency ward clean up event.
The event took place on Sunday 16 July from 11am to 3pm.
41 volunteers took to the beach to remove litter and cleared 25.2 kilograms of waste from the seafront.
Coral Evans, Campaign Manager at Leave No Trace Brighton, said: "We were absolutely delighted to be able to support the council’s Big Clean Up Regency event on Sunday.
“Collaborative efforts to inspire environmental stewardship, direct community action and shared care to help protect and preserve the health of Brighton's coastal and ocean environment are extremely valuable, rewarding and effective.”
Collective cleaning action
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Chair of the City Environment, South Downs and The Sea Committee, said: “We had a brilliant weekend of collective action to clean up our beautiful city.
“Councillors, community groups and residents worked together to remove litter, clean graffiti and improve pavement access in wards across the city.
“It was great to be out in our communities and working with residents. We had lots of really positive feedback and conversations with passersby.
“We want to say a massive thank you to the brilliant staff at Cityclean for helping us organise the Big Clean Up, to Leave No Trace for their support in our Regency event, and to all the amazing volunteers who joined us to take part.”
