Plenty has been happening throughout the city, from tidy-up events to late night deep-cleans and a marathon task at the end of the week on Sunday (10 April) for our Tidy-Up Team members.
They will be working in partnership with the Brighton Marathon organisers to undertake the mammoth job of litter picking around the water stations for the runners and visitors to the city.
There’s been so much happening over the last couple of weeks to help brighten up the city and make it as sparkling as possible for everyone to enjoy.
So, keep your eyes peeled and do let us know if you’ve taken the #BigBagChallenge.
Events so far
On 26 March 2022, in association with the Friends of Preston Park, we kicked off the Keep Brighton & Hove Tidy fortnight which is part of Keep Britain Tidy's Great British Spring Clean with our fantastic rock painting and litter picking event.
The sun shone and the day proved extremely popular with over 80 adults and children, letting their imaginations run wild with our environment-themed rock painting session.
It was great to see everyone getting so involved and if you’d like to take a look at some of the arty creations, why not pop along to see if you can find them dotted around on display at the Rock Garden in Preston Park.
The litter pick was a real success with 40 People taking the #BigBagChallenge in Preston Park. In total the group managed to collect 22 Bags of rubbish, making it a cleaner, greener, safer and more enjoyable, not only for us, but for the wildlife too.
Sprucing up our city
Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, Leader of the Council, said: “Over the last fortnight, we’ve seen residents, schools and businesses in Brighton & Hove coming together to show their love for our city. I want to thank everyone who’s litter picked, swept, weeded and painted out graffiti.
“Events such as the Keep Brighton & Hove Tidy fortnight help hone our focus on reducing litter on the streets and improving the environment for everyone.
“It’s been great to get out in the Spring air and really satisfying to see so many working together to give our city a Spring clean.
"With so many due to take to the streets for the Brighton Marathon, the work continues in our communities to keep our city as beautiful as we can.”
A big shout out has to go to The Brighton & Hove Tidy-Up Team who have been busy throughout the two weeks tidying and litter picking along Lewes Road and St Andrews School children who dedicated their time and efforts in carrying out a beach clean too.
In total 80 school children, each with their litter pickers and bags managed to remove 15 bags of litter, making the beach a nicer place for us all and reducing the amount of litter in our ocean.
Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, Leader of the Council, joined up with members of the Tidy-Up Team along with National Highways today (Friday 8 April), where together they carried out a fantastic job removing graffiti and stickers from street furniture and collecting litter along Lewes Road to ensure the area was spotless.
Matthew Salt, Service Manager, National Highways said: "We were really pleased to help Brighton and Hove undertake some tidying works in the city today.
"It’s really important to National Highways that we have a good, collaborative relationship and opportunities such as this, help us to underpin that.
"It was a great experience and one that helps us to work together, resulting in a city that is cleaner for everyone."
The CityClean team is also working hard throughout the evenings to brighten up our street scene in lots of different locations, de-stickering, removing graffiti from our street furniture and lamp posts and jet washing pavements, as well as removing litter along the verge and central reservation of the A27, from the top of London Road to Hangleton Interchange.
Marathon Clean Up
This Sunday (10 April) lots of runners, along with many visitors, will be taking to the streets of the city for the Brighton Marathon.
It’s the final day of the Great British Spring Clean for 2022 and what a job to finish it on.
There are over 30 volunteers from the Tidy-Up Team who will be undertaking the marathon task of litter picking around the water stations.
Not only will this help the organisers, but it ensures the amount of rubbish within the city along these routes is kept to a minimum.
How can you get involved?
Getting involved is easy, whether you’ve tided outside the front of your house, litter picked your street, helped a neighbour, or picked up a piece of litter that’s been dropped, everything counts.
We can carry on this great work after the Great British Spring Clean has come to an end to help make sure Brighton & Hove is loved by all and kept clean and tidy.
