Plans to serve up three new padel courts
Raquet sport players look set be served with the city’s first purpose built padel facility next year.
A planning application has been submitted to build three new covered courts at Withdean Sports Complex.
Temporary court replaced
Plans for the courts, located in a central area within the site, include floodlighting for evening use.
If approved, the new courts will replace the current temporary court which was installed last year.
Fast growing sport
Padel Tennis, a tennis and squash hybrid, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the temporary facility at Withdean has shown huge interest from across the city.
Played by four players in a glass-enclosed court, about one-third of the size of a tennis court, the rules are similar to tennis, although players serve underarm, making it much easier for beginners and people of all ages.
Hugely popular
“The temporary court has been hugely popular with a diverse range of players, so we are delighted to be sharing our plans to build three new permanent courts at Withdean Sports Complex,” said Councillor Martin Osborne, co-chair of the Tourism, Equalities Communities and Culture Committee
“As a major sporting city, we are keen to encourage our residents to stay fit and healthy and provide opportunities for them to participate in a wide range of activities at our leisure facilities.”
