Marking Transgender Day of Remembrance 2022
We’re flying the Trans Flag this weekend to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on Sunday 20 November.
TDOR is an annual global event honouring the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
A vigil for Transgender Day of Remembrance is being held from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday 20 November in Jubilee Square, Brighton, BN1 1GE.
People are invited to bring flowers, candles and signs to join TNBI communities in taking time to remember those lost this year.
After hearing from guest speakers and performers the vigil will head to The Ledward Centre.
Standing in solidarity
Councillor Steph Powell, Co-Chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee, said: “We stand in solidarity with our Trans, non-binary and intersex communities.
“Brighton & Hove stands proud as a beacon city for trans, non-binary, gender Queer and LGB communities. We all work for it to be a safe and inclusive city, for our thriving diverse and intersectional communities.
“To our trans and non-binary communities we, once again, stand firmly alongside you. We work hard to defend your right for full inclusion and trans equality.
“We note with horror the continued loss of lives to transphobic violence across the world and the impacts to our own communities of harmful narratives, hate crime and violence directed at them.
“We hear the clear call from our communities to continue to challenge and improve. We are resolute in our commitment to full equality and the pursuit of a fairer city for all.
“The link between demonising communities and the harm experienced is clear. TDoR is a roll call of individuals who have lost their lives to such violence, each person a precious life lost.
“Over the past years we have listened and learned from the authentic experiences of our local trans and non-binary communities allowing us to better provide services and respond to the concerns of our communities in an educated, evidence-led way.
“In Brighton & Hove, we are proud of our commitment to trans equality.
“Everyone deserves to be valued and treated with respect. That is not open to debate. Trans lives are not a debate.”
Our trans and non-binary inclusive approach
We’re proud of being a diverse city, and the council is committed to equality and inclusion for all people, including our Trans and Non-Binary residents.
The city’s 2015 Trans Needs Assessment and Trans Equality Scrutiny group identified the Trans and non-binary community as a vulnerable group and highlighted the need to remove the stigma and build relationships.
We are aware of an ongoing interest in our Trans and Non-Binary inclusive approach. We know from a range of evidence that gender is more complicated than is traditionally recognised.
Our equality and inclusion strategy rightly supports those who are experiencing greatest disadvantage. We will work together to advance equality and inclusion for Trans and Non-Binary communities. We aim to do this in partnership with national and local organisations and communities.
Reporting hate incidents
Everyone in Brighton & Hove has a right to feel safe.
We are committed to supporting communities harmed by hate crime.
We encourage anyone who has experienced anti-social behaviour or hate incidents, including Transphobia, harassment or distress due to their gender identity, to report it.
You can report hate incidents or ASB to Sussex Police on 101 if it’s not an emergency. In an emergency, always call 999.
Council tenants, council leaseholders and tenants of leaseholders who've experienced hate incidents or ASB should report it to Housing Customer Services. Housing association tenants need to report incidents to their landlord.
Private rented sector tenants and owner occupiers can report hate incidents and ASB to the Community Safety Team using our online anti-social behaviour and hate incident reporting form or by contacting our Community Safety team by emailing communitysafety.casework@brighton-hove.gov.uk or calling 01273 292735.
We’re also working with community partners to offer an option of reporting hate incidents to them in a confidential safe space.
