As a key part of the city’s Sports Facilities Investment Plan, we are looking at developing a new facility to replace the current King Alfred Leisure Centre.
Developing a new facility
Some areas of the centre are now over 80 years old and increasing maintenance and running costs make it costly and inefficient to operate. We are therefore looking to develop a new facility which will provide a more modern, energy-efficient building offering a greatly improved environment for residents and visitors.
No decision has yet been taken on whether the new facility will be built on the existing site or a new one. Any new site would be in the west of the city to serve the same community that currently uses the King Alfred Leisure Centre.
Timescales
Timescales are not yet finalised, but it is unlikely that work on the new facility will begin before late 2024 or early 2025.
The project is at an early stage and we are now starting to contact the centre's leaseholders, sports clubs and community groups to begin a conversation with them to understand their views.
More news
More news about the project will be shared early next year as we continue our engagement to hear views from residents and partners across the city.
