Fantastic new facilities open in Carden Park

One of the city’s most extensive playground and park makeover projects is ready for play!

The new play and fitness area in Carden Park in Carden Hill, Brighton was officially opened this morning (Friday 12 August) in a ceremony lead by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Lizzie Deane.

People of all ages and abilities can now enjoy exploring Carden Park’s new inclusive playground, multi-use games area with mini exercise track, and a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness space.

The refurbished park, built in conjunction with the council by KOMPAN, includes a new teen zone with play equipment for older children, and a quiet zone for friends to relax, plus many sensory play opportunities.

State-of-the-art equipment

The fitness area has a range of advanced equipment designed to meet the exercise interests of all - beginners, more experienced users and those with disabilities or other needs.

The new facilities are set alongside other informal fitness areas and complemented by facilities and other activities provided and run by the neighbouring Old Boat Corner Community Centre.

Everything is free to use, including a specialised Fitness App, which lets users record and track their activity and progress.

The refurbishment has been funded by Section 106 developer contributions and is the latest completed as part of the £3 million playground programme to improve play facilities across the city.

The council and KOMPAN worked together to draw up detailed proposals for the refurbishment.

Community feedback sessions and other community engagements during the development stage resulted in adjustments and improvements to the plans.

Among a number of special events planned for Carden Park in the coming weeks are ‘Train the Trainer events, where expert trainers run free introductory training sessions for the public on all the different pieces of fitness equipment.

Ready for residents to enjoy!

Councillor Hannah Clare, deputy leader of the council, said: “There’s been a lot of work to get these fantastic new play and facilities in place - it’s great to see them complete and ready for residents to enjoy!

“It’s a brilliant facility for enjoyment, play, sport, fitness and, most importantly, a great space for people to meet up and have fun with friends and family.

“The Carden Park development is one of the largest investments of section 106 money the city has seen - part of the amazing £3 million refurbishment programme our CityParks Team are rolling out to improve play facilities across the city.”
