Circus Street development scoops another award
The Circus Street development has won another award, taking the Public/Private Partnership Award at the EG Awards.
The annual real estate sector awards are judged by a panel of industry experts who were looking for successful and innovative partnerships providing solutions to community and environmental issues.
Fourth award
The award was made jointly to the council, the University of Brighton and developers U+I and is the fourth award Circus Street has received. It has also taken the silver award in the future projects category in the 2021 World Architecture News awards; been named as Building of the Year 2022 by Architecture Journal; and won a Sussex Heritage Trust Award.
New homes, student accommodation & employment space
The 2.4-acre Circus Street site was formerly home to the municipal fruit and vegetable market and university annex building. It has been transformed as a mixed-use scheme and ‘innovation quarter’.
This £130 million Public Private Partnership includes 142 new homes, of which 20 per cent will meet the Government’s definition of affordability. Sustainability attributes include BREEAM Excellent standards across the entire development.
The scheme also features 450 new student bedrooms, 3,000 square feet of flexible office accommodation, and the Dance Space. This new dance studio and headquarters for South East Dance is expected to attract 70,000 visitors and users a year.
Unique and successful partnership
Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty said: ““I am thrilled that Circus Street has won another important national award. This acknowledges the unique and successful partnership between Brighton & hove City Council, U+I and the University of Brighton.
“The Circus Street development has transformed this derelict brownfield site into an exciting city community with bold design, homes, jobs, culture and community space with quality public art that can be enjoyed by all.”
Rob Sloper, Project Director, U+I, said, “It has been a pleasure working with such a forward thinking Council and University to deliver really important economic and cultural benefits to the local area and the City as a whole. We are delighted to win this award for a specialism that we are particularly proud of; working in partnership with public sector organisations.”
Professor Debra Humphris, University of Brighton's Vice-Chancellor, said, "The Circus Street scheme is a worthy winner of this award and is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through bold thinking and partnership working. The partnership we have with U+I and the city council has not only made a huge difference at Circus Street but also transformed our Moulsecoomb campus for the benefits of our students, staff and the local community."
Benefitting the local economy
U+I estimate that Circus Street is creating over 400 new jobs and will add more than £200 million gross value to the local economy in the next ten years.
