Deb Austin appointed permanent Executive Director for Families, Children & Learning
Deb Austin has been appointed to the permanent role of Executive Director for Families, Children & Learning at the council.
Deb had been interim director since November 2019. Before that she was Assistant Director – Children’s Safeguarding & Care, and has worked for the council for many years.
Her appointment follows a competitive interview process. This included stakeholder panels with schools and young people, and an assessment interview with cross-party councillors,
Chief Executive Geoff Raw said: “Deb has shown great leadership and support for our children, family and disability services and the wider Brighton & Hove family of schools.
"She has led the directorate through an unprecedented and challenging period, as we respond to the continuing pandemic. This appointment is much deserved."
Councillor Hannah Clare, Deputy Leader of the Council and Chair of the Children, Young People and Skills Committee said: "I'm delighted that we have appointed Deb on a permanent basis.
"Deb has real ambition for these services and knowledge of the challenges we need to address going forward. I know that she will lead the team through our work to achieving these goals.
"I’m really looking forward to continuing to work with Deb and the whole Families, Children & Learning team so the council can do the best for children, young people and families in our city.”
Speaking about her appointment, Deb said: "I'm excited and really pleased to have been appointed to this role permanently. It’s been an amazing experience working alongside so many dedicated and talented staff and other stakeholders.
"I’m keen to continue our journey to deliver outstanding services to children and families in the city.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank all Families, Children & Learning staff for their incredible work and support since I became interim director. I’m proud of our directorate and what we have achieved and can achieve in the city.”
