Council leader welcomes Shoreham Port’s sustainability week
Council leader, Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty welcomes Shoreham Port hosting sustainability week, between Wednesday 8 September and Friday 10 September, an action packed programme of events over three days alongside the Global Wind Energy Council and Sussex Dolphin Project.
Shoreham Port, who have again been designated an eco-port for their sustainable practices, are using this opportunity to showcase what’s happening at the port and show local communities some of the ways they are contributing to a healthier environment and a more sustainable future.
They have been actively pursuing a sustainable agenda for years including recently installing a ground source heat pump system for their officers just last year, further reducing natural resource consumption in the operation of the port.
The programme for sustainability week involves a wide range of interesting events including a walking tour of the port itself exploring the local flora and fauna, dolphin spotting with experts off the Sussex Coast and a boat tour of the Rampion Windfarm site.
Undertaking many inspiring projects
Council Phélim Mac Cafferty, Leader of the council said: “I am delighted to welcome Shoreham Port’s sustainability week, happening this week.
"As well as a really important part of infrastructure in the city, the functioning port is undertaking many current inspiring projects, playing their part for the environment.
"This includes a commitment to net-zero air quality emissions, new environmentally friendly energy, another wind turbine on site is in development and the port is an ‘Eco Port’raising awareness on environmental protection.
“The current climate crisis is described by the United Nations report as a ‘code red for humanity.’
"So it’s really important to understand how businesses such as the Port are restructuring their work and the events this week display an array of interesting and thought provoking proposals.
"The shifts needed to reduce the impact of climate change include monumental changes in how businesses approach waste, their consumption of natural resources and how they interact with the environment.
“But we know there are many businesses in the city undertaking really inspiring work and seeking technological solutions to the environmental problems our planet faces.
"We are proud to work alongside these partners in achieving carbon neutrality. In its sustainability week, Shoreham Port is one of these businesses which has really honed in on the impact of its work on the environment.
“I would ask business to look at the inspiring projects the Port has undertaken so they can themselves can put in place measures to create less waste.
"We need businesses to play their part in getting Brighton & Hove closer to net-zero, which more often than not mean businesses can save money and save resources too.
“Shoreham Port’s approach and initiatives are an excellent example of what businesses can do to reduce reliance on the consumption of natural resources, and I encourage residents to attend sustainability week events to be inspired and find out more about the steps being taken to provide a sustainable future.”
