Apprenticeships – it could be you!
There’s never been a better time to start an apprenticeship – or for companies to take on a new apprentice.
Anyone over 16 can start an apprenticeship. They’re open to people starting their career, or who want a career change, or wish to up-skill in a current job.
To mark National Apprenticeships Week the council is working with the Sussex Council of Training Providers to raise awareness of the fantastic opportunities available locally to employers and job seekers.
The council currently supports 170 apprentices, as well as former apprentices who made such a big impression that they went on to gain permanent jobs at the council.
People like Jonathan Martin. He did an apprenticeship in Business Administration in the council’s Parking Projects team. The team were so impressed that Jonathan has now secured a permanent role as a Project Officer in the team.
Jonathan said: “My first apprenticeship helped me further develop key skills. Previously I wasn’t confident in my own abilities.
“It helped me prove to myself and others that I was capable of achieving things.”
Apprenticeships are available in all levels from GSCE equivalent to degree. There are more than 800 types of apprenticeship job roles nationally in 170 different industries.
They include everything from law to graphic design, advertising to electric vehicle engineering, health and social care to teaching and management.
Hiring an apprentice has many benefits to employers. They can adapt the apprentice’s training to the needs of their business.
It means they can expand and up-skill their workforce whilst also offering people from their local community valuable learning experiences.
In a government survey 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity and 74% said it helped them improve the quality of their product or service.
