Another boost for electric vehicle charging with new rapid chargers in Brighton & Hove
The city’s electric vehicle infrastructure is continuing to grow with the introduction of three new rapid charging hubs, installed at:
- Preston Park
- Ashton Rise
- Victoria Road
A fourth at Brighton Racecourse will be installed later in the year.
The hubs are designed in the long term for Brighton & Hove’s fleet of taxis, but two bays at each hub can be used by any electric vehicle owner until such time that taxi uptake requires all the bays.
A rapid charger can fully charge an electric vehicle in as little as 30 minutes. Both rapid hubs and residential chargers cost 27p per kWh and are powered by 100% renewable energy.

The new rapid charging hubs are in addition to the 207 on-street charging points installed across the city last year.
How can I charge my vehicle?
The new chargers have been installed by EB Charging, the council’s long-term partner for installing, maintaining and operating electric vehicle charging points across the city.
Residents and visitors can find their nearest charging point by downloading the EB Charging app, ‘Electric Blue’, to their mobile phones. There is no subscription fee and no minimum spend. To celebrate the new chargers, EB Charging will be offering free charging for all users for the first month.
Following this, charging will cost 26p per kWh (27p for rapid chargers) and is fuelled by 100% renewable energy. The council will receive 1p per kwh in year one increasing to 4p per kwh in year four.
Growing EV infrastructure
The council’s lead on taxis, Councillor Steve Davis, said: “This is another great step forward in providing an infrastructure for the growing number of electric vehicles in the city. We want to see more of Brighton & Hove’s taxi fleet going electric and these new hubs will really support them to do that.
“Interest in EVs is increasing all the time so we need to be ahead of the curve when it comes to providing charge points.
“By giving residents and visitors that do need to drive the proper EV infrastructure, we can further reduce toxic emissions and move toward our goal of being carbon neutral by 2030.”
